Leiber’s late short fiction, and the fine horror novel Our Lady of Darkness, combine autobiographical issues like his struggle with depression and alcoholism with meditations on the emotional content of the fantastic genres. Two stories deal amusingly with Beat culture and another, the longest, is about a chess tournament against a computer. To those who complain about scientific inaccuracies – give me a break. I tell you, the thought of it gave me the creeps.

Yes, a beautiful young lady’s face all glowing in frits dark and looking at me from the fifth floor of the opposite apartment, which hereabouts is the floor just above the white blanket of frozen air. This story is good for getting a better understanding of what our atmosphere really is and dispelling some common tropes about living in lsiber vacuum of space.
Great review, Joachim — Fritz is also one of my favorite authors. And still the steps kept shuffling closer. You can’t maintain an air supply without hermetic sealing. As if all folks didn’t have to hang together and pool every bit of warmth just to keep alive.
