Originally published at the time of Gurdjieff’s death and authorized by Gurdjieff himself, it is considered one of the best expositions of the structure of Gurdjieff’s ideas and is often used as a means of teaching Gurdjieff’s system, although Ouspensky himself never endorsed its use in such a broad manner.

The latter part of the book also describes the author’s feelings and motives behind his eventual decision to teach the system independently, not under the direct supervision of his teacher, Gurdjieff, which he formally announced to his students in London in early Even groups that are not necessarily exploitative or fraudulent tend to attract people who especially like the idea of being “esoteric,” to use a term Ouspensky used, but which was far more appropriate eighty years ago than it is today.
What seems to us to be progress or evolution is a partial modification which can be immediately counterbalanced by a corresponding modification in an opposite direction. Probably one of the best summaries of the whole of Gurdjieff’s teachings, and also a nice map of the whole ‘generally accepted’ story of Gurdjieff and Ouspensky’s work.
It talks about ‘hydrogens’ and has the airs of an actual science, but is totally void of empirical justification. Not only because the many ideas, of which I enjoyed the ones on psychology much more than the ones on the cosmic order of things. This latter property is not what most people mean when they use this word. This is because our minds are split into many different factions based on our feelings.
Many people and groups use this book to learn about Gurdjieff’s ideas but Ouspensky, even though he was for a considerable time a student and spent a great deal of time with Gurdjieff, finally turned away from him.
P.d.ouspensly Best Books of Gurdjieff’s goal, to introduce the Work to the West, attracted many students, amongthem Ouspensky, an established mathematician, journalist, and, with the publication of In Search of the Miraculous, an eloquent and persuasive proselyte.

This is extremely difficult, and very few can wish for or bear to see the truth about themselves. Easier than Gurdjieff, certainly, but so jam-packed with useful information, that it needs tge be read over the course weeks, or even months. However, it is all pretty clearly incompatible miraculuos even a rudimentary understanding of the world from the 21st century standpoint Gurdjieff denies evolution, astronomy, etc.
