The novel is rich with descriptions of wonderful characters: Both are set in Barcelona during the s to the s. While attending the funeral of one of his university lecturers, again in present time, sews remembers his student days and his coming of age while being introduced to sex, politics and extremist thinkers.
He remembers his harsh Catholic upbringing, how the whole family fled to France during the Spanish Civil Warhow they returned under Franco and the revolt that ensued.

The narrative is linear, as linear as is possible with Goytisolo, whose prose is as characteristically windward as ever, although jusn is a more distinct delineation here between divergences in style or stories whereas they all melded together like a convulsive fever of dreams in the later books, but only if you’re paying attention – stories and narrative modes still verge in and collapse in on one another, perspectives shift from a character witnessed in the third-person to the accusatory YOU of the second; a perspective which casts the reader as an exile, as landless, as one without a home.
The greater part of the novel consists of episodes from Alvaro’s younger years: In Paris he became a committed communist and friend of Sartre, another serious and humorless man who deas strong and often misguided opinions on what was going on in the world at the time. Published January 1st by Dalkey Archive Press first published In Paris, he worked as a consultant for the publisher Gallimard while he was also working ed his own oeuvre. Grammatically difficult, but an incredible tale of an exiled Spaniard in the mid-twentieth century and how he deals with living away from his home country but still being so connected ideologically to the outcome of everything that happens there. The story is said to have many autobiographical elements.
It is also a story of his family history and the lives of his friends. While living in Paris, he started the most experimental side of his books.
